This is a
no-brainer. Few if any illnesses are
completely preventable, but few if any injuries are not. Accidents
happen, but
as any successful plaintiffs’ attorney will tell you, there is always a
reason
or a cause that could have been avoided. We cannot live our lives in
padded
rooms, but sometimes, avoiding potentially hazardous conditions is a
reasonable
thing to do. If you like bungee jumping or sky diving or snow boarding
or sky
boarding or snow diving or some other extreme sport, then you can
expect your
health to be affected adversely, regardless of how careful you are. For
the
rest of us, driving attentively and obeying all traffic laws, watching
our step,
holding stair banisters and using grab bars in our bathrooms would help
keep us
healthy. And, by the way, hazardous behavior can take many forms.
Clandestine
activities that are illicit, provocative or offensive can be more
dangerous
than cleaning the gutters. We are grateful to those who do dangerous
work and
put themselves in harm’s way.
